Premise:  Helen Hamilton has always felt different. Although she’s undeniably beautiful, she has a hard time making friends. Life on the tiny island of Nantucket is difficult because Helen always feels as if she’s trying to hide something about herself that she doesn’t even understand. When the Delos family arrives on the island, the vivid nightmares about a desperate desert crossing begin. Helen wakes with her feet bloodied and her sheets dirtied. Worst of all, she seems to be hallucinating because three ancient women follow her everywhere, weeping tears of blood. But the most bizarre event occurs when Helen first lays eyes on Lucas Delos and she is overcome with the intense desire to kill him. As Helen gets to know Lucas and the Delos family, the mysteries of her own life begin to make more sense. Helen is one of the mythical Scion, children of the Greek gods of Olympus. Along with superpowers, Helen learns that being a demigod also comes with enemies determined to kill her. And while she no longer wants to kill Lucas Delos, her feelings for him have developed into something far more dangerous for both of them – a love that can never be realized without starting a massive world war.

Potential Points of Concern: Helen’s fellow students are not very nice to her.

Helen tries to strangle Lucas the first time she sees him.

Helen is repeatedly attacked by other demigods who want to kill her. She learns to fight but suffers severe injuries many times. Violence is not extremely graphic but is described.

Helen and Lucas must constantly fight their physical attraction to each other.

Age Appropriateness:  12 +
