Premise: Elroy is obsessed with girls. He knows that he supposed to be “doing things” with girls, things like getting to second base even though he isn’t quite sure what the different bases actually are. He’s managed to kiss a couple, but things never seem to move on to the next level. When Elroy learns that a group of popular jocks at his school have formed the Second Base Club where points are awarded for reaching different bases, he wonders if that’s the way to get what he’s looking for. But when Elroy is finally invited to attend a Second Base Club party, he discovers that these guys will stoop to some pretty shady levels to “score”.
Potential Points of Concern:
While the premise of this book is Elroy’s desire to reach “second base”, no sexual acts are ever described in any graphic terms at all. In fact, Elroy is a bit confused on what the bases are, and this is never defined. In fact, this story focuses more on being yourself than on sexual pursuits.
Elroy dates various girls and kisses them. In one instance, when he tries to take things further, the girl says no. When Elroy doesn’t hear her and stop, she punches him in the face. He stops immediately.
Very vague references to boys having erections.
Elroy witnesses two members of the Second Base Club putting a white pill – presumably a date rape type drug – into a girl’s beer. He stops the girl from drinking the drugged beverage. She calls the police while Elroy is forced to run away from the angry boys who want to beat him up. One of the angry boys hits Elroy in the head with a piece of wood. Elroy is injured but recovers completely.
